Robert Bolling Kelly served as an executive officer of MTB Squadron 3 and commander of MTB PT-34 in the Philippines from 1941-42. Earned a Silver Star for his part in the evacuation of General McArthur to Australia and a Distinguished Service Cross (one under the Medal of Honor) and Navy Cross for engaging a Japanese cruiser in PT-34 and defending it after being forced to beach. His actions in the Philippines were portrayed in John Ford’s “They Were Expendable,” with John Wayne’s “Rusty” Ryan being based on Kelly. These were his pants. Straight cut, clean look.
